What is the Office of Employee Assistance?
The Office of Employee Assistance is the faculty/staff employee assistance program of Florida International University. The OEA provides free and confidential professional assistance to help employees and their families resolve personal problems that affect their personal lives or job performance. The mission of the program is to enhance the quality of life of FIU faculty and staff; improve personal and organizational effectiveness; and create a healthier campus community by providing mental health assessment, brief interventions and/or referrals, group development facilitation, and educational and training programs.

What Happens at the OEA?
As much as we'd like to separate our work life from our personal problems, it is often difficult to do so. Without even realizing it, we may find that our mind wanders, we miss work -- or when we are there, we're not really all there. That is why FIU created the Office of Employee Assistance. OEA provides confidential, professional assessment, intervention and/or referral depending upon the nature of the problem and the specific circumstances. Call 305-348-2469 to schedule an appointment to speak to an OEA professional. You will be able to consult with an experienced clinician who will listen to your concerns, discuss and explore your options, and then work with you to determine a plan of action.

What is the Cost for Services?
All OEA assessment, consultation and referral services are free. If brief intervention by an OEA clinician is determined to be appropriate, such services are also free. When a referral to an outside entity is recommended, for example, for on-going treatment or other services beyond the scope of the OEA is recommended, the employee's health insurance will be considered. If additional services are not covered by insurance, the OEA professional will try to help the employee minimize the costs.
Who is Eligible to Use OEA?
All FIU faculty and staff and their immediate dependents are eligible for services. OPS employees who are also students should seek services from the University's Counseling and Psychological Services Center. Under some circumstances the Counseling and Psychological Services Center (CPSC) professional staff may consult with the OEA Director and may refer students to OEA who are also employees. CPSC (UP) Phone: 305.348.2434; CPSC (BBC) Phone: 305-919-5305.
